Biotherapeutic Drainage
Biotherapeutic Drainage ("Drainage" for short) is a medical philosophy and practice developed in Europe and brought to the U.S. in the early 2000s by Dr. Gerard Guenoit, MD.
It uses a variety of liquid drops to efficiently eliminate physical and surprisingly emotional toxicity from the body to restore optimal function.
When cells function correctly, they release waste and toxins, which are carried out of the body through organs of elimination called excretory organs or emunctories.
Our primary organs of elimination are the bowels/liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. We remove toxins through bowel movements, urination, breathing out volatile gases such as carbon dioxide, and sweating. An essential primary emunctory that is commonly overlooked is emotion. Emotions can be a significant source of internal toxicity that accumulates and interferes with our well-being. Drainage can address this.
When the Emunctories are inefficient or not functioning properly, the body attempts to release toxins through alternative routes, known as secondary emunctories. Secondary emunctories include the mucous membranes, musculoskeletal system, skin, and mental/emotional. When the body diverts toxic debris to the secondary emunctories, symptoms such as chronic sinus/vaginal infections/BPH, joint/muscle pain, skin rashes, infections, or depression/anxiety occur. Inflammatory conditions ("itises") like arthritis, rhinitis, and colitis occur. These are signs that the emunctories need to be addressed and toxicity released.
Biotherapeutic drainage effectively facilitates the organism's natural ability to eliminate toxins, making it safe for infants, children, adults, and elderly patients. It can be used in conjunction with various medications and in combination with herbs, constitutional homeopathy, and natural therapeutics.
Drainage has a wide-ranging impact within the body and can affect multiple systems simultaneously. It is based on these foundational principles:
– The body has an innate ability to eliminate both internally generated (endogenous) and externally acquired (exogenous) toxins.
– The goal is to restore optimal physiological function.
– True disease cannot exist where healthy physiology is maintained.
– Each person is unique and requires individualized care.
– Healing starts at the cellular level and affects overall system function.
– Restoration of homeostasis and health takes time—it’s a process, not a quick fix.
Drainage and immune competency
In addition to releasing toxicity, biotherapeutic drainage is also effective in affecting cell function. This is particularly important for patients with chronic infections. The cell and immune system are supposed to recognize things that are "non-self" and attack them. When the body fails to recognize invaders, illnesses such as mold, chronic viruses, long-haul COVID, and Lyme disease can result. We become sick because of an ineffective immune response. When the immune system can't differentiate between "self" and "non-self," then autoimmunity occurs due to an inappropriate immune response.
Biotherapeutic drainage can address immune dysregulation and many other dysregulations, for that matter.
I have had the privilege of studying extensively with Dr. Dickson Thom—one of the world’s leading experts on biotherapeutic drainage and author of The Unda Numbers: An Energetic Journey to Homeostasis. His mentorship and clinical wisdom have deeply influenced my practice. I incorporate this elegant, effective approach to healing because I’ve seen the profound difference it makes in patients’ lives.
