My Story

About

My Story

I’m a Colorado native born in Denver and raised in Boulder since the age of 3. My family moved to the Niwot area when I was in junior high and I grew up in the countryside with a menagerie of animals and three siblings.  I graduated from Niwot High School and then attended the University of Colorado - School of Business. A couple of years after graduation I became a Certified Public Accountant and worked in the tax field for several years.

However, throughout my entire life, I never felt well and was in and out of doctors’ offices trying to find out why. Because my lab tests were always normal, no one could get to the bottom of my poor health. At 14 years old I was put on tranquilizers to calm the stress that my doctors believed was the culprit. At 26 I was diagnosed and treated for cancer.  At 31, I weighed 98 lbs, had constant cold sores, acne and rashes and my digestion was horrific.   Things would work for a time and I would get a little bit better but then worsen again.  I finally came to my wit's end and scheduled an appointment with a naturopathic doctor.

My health journey started that day and over time and with the help of many remarkable health care providers, I rebuilt my health. Eventually, I changed careers and became a naturopathic doctor so I could help others the way I had been helped. Without this medicine, I would likely be an autoimmune statistic or even be dead but instead, I feel better and am healthier now despite growing older.  I invite you to start feeling your best so you can live and enjoy the life of your dreams.

Biotherapeutic Drainage

About

Biotherapeutic Drainage ("Drainage" for short) is a medical philosophy and practice developed in Europe and brought to the U.S. in the early 2000s by Dr. Gerard Guenoit, MD.

It efficiently eliminates physical and emotional toxicity from the body and restores organs, tissues, glands, and cellular systems to optimal functioning.

When cells function correctly, they release wastes and toxins, which are carried out of the body through organs of elimination called emunctories.

Our primary organs of elimination are the bowels/liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin.  We remove toxins through bowel movements, urination, breathing out volatile gases such as carbon dioxide, and sweating. An essential primary emunctory that is commonly overlooked is emotion. Emotions can be a significant source of internal toxicity that accumulates and interferes with our well-being. Drainage can address this.

When the Emunctories are inefficient or not working properly, the body wisely attempts to release toxins through alternative routes called secondary emunctories.  Secondary emunctories include the mucous membranes, musculoskeletal system, skin, and mental/emotional.  When the body diverts toxic debris to the secondary emunctories, symptoms such as chronic sinus/vaginal infections/BPH, joint/muscle pain, skin rashes, infections, or depression/anxiety occur. Inflammatory conditions ("itises")  like arthritis, rhinitis, and colitis occur. These are signs that the emunctories need to be addressed and toxicity released.

Biotherapeutic drainage beautifully facilitates the organism's natural ability to release toxicity. It is safe for infants, children, adults, and elderly patients.  It can be used with various medications and in conjunction with herbs, constitutional homeopathy, and natural therapeutics.

Drainage Philosophy – Drainage casts a wide net within the body, improving many areas of health.  We understand that:

– The body has the innate ability to release toxicity made endogenously and acquired exogenously.

– The goal is to restore the body to normal and optimal physiological function.

– Disease cannot exist when physiology operates normally.

– Each person is different and must be treated individually.

– It works on the cellular level and can positively affect cellular function.

– It doesn't happen overnight, but optimal function and homeostasis are restored over time.

The current medical paradigm is that we take a pill, and symptoms quickly go away, but that is not how the body heals.  Lasting health takes time.  Like healing a broken bone, it feels better before completely healing.  And so is it with everything in the body.   Feeling better and being better are not the same; being better takes time.

How does your body rid itself of toxins?

In addition to opening the emunctories, biotherapeutic drainage is also effective in affecting cell function.  This is particularly important for patients with chronic infections.   The cell and immune system are supposed to recognize things that are "non-self" and attack them. When the body doesn't do that, mold illness, chronically elevated viral loads, and Lyme bacteria can live happily in the body, making us sick because of an ineffective immune response. Biotherapeutic drainage can activate enzymes and stimulate immune function to keep these microbes at bay.

I am fortunate to work and study extensively with Dr. Dickson Thom, who wrote the book on Unda Numbers and is one of the world's foremost experts in biotherapeutic drainage. I have incorporated this clinical training into my practice because it is an incredible tool for promoting healing and wellness.

Naturopathic Philosophy

About

Naturopathic Philosophy

The education and training of primary care providers and naturopathic doctors are very similar. The differences between the two stem mainly in philosophy. Naturopathic doctors believe the body has an innate ability to heal. And we see this all of the time! If we skin our knee or cut ourselves, the body stops the bleeding, produces a scab and makes new skin all on its own! If you get a cold, you eventually get over it...and faster if you rest and support the immune system. The body is the most miraculous thing on the planet and it knows what to do to heal and return to balance. Naturopathic doctors believe our job is to remove impediments to healing and stimulate the body to do its job.
Naturopathic doctors follow these principles of healing:

  • Prevention

The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of lifestyle habits that foster good health. The doctor assesses risk factors and hereditary susceptibility to disease and makes appropriate interventions to avoid further harm and risk to the patient. The emphasis is on building health rather than on fighting disease.
  • Doctor as a Teacher

Beyond an accurate diagnosis and appropriate prescription, the doctor works to create a healthy, sensitive interpersonal relationship with the patient. A cooperative doctor-patient relationship has inherent therapeutic value. The doctor’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for his or her own health. The doctor is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates or accomplishes healing.
  • Treat the Whole Person

Health and disease are conditions of the whole organism, involving a complex interaction of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors. The goal is to treat the whole person by taking all of these factors into account. The harmonious functioning of all aspects of the individual is essential to recovery from and prevention of disease, and requires a personalized and comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.
  • First, Do No Harm

The process of healing includes the generation of symptoms, which are, in fact, expressions of the life force attempting to heal itself. Therapeutic actions should be complementary to and synergistic with this healing process. Interventions can inherently support or antagonize the body’s natural ability to heal; therefore, methods designed to suppress symptoms without removing underlying causes are considered harmful and are avoided or minimized.
  • Identify and Treat the Cause

Illness does not occur without cause. Underlying causes of disease need to be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness. Symptoms are expressions of the body’s attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease; therefore, naturopathic medicine addresses itself primarily to the underlying causes of disease, rather than to the symptoms. Causes may occur on many levels, including physical, mental-emotional, and spiritual. The doctor’s goal is to evaluate fundamental underlying causes on multiple levels, directing treatment at root causes as well as seeking relief of symptoms.
  • The Healing Power of Nature

The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The healing process directed by the life force is ordered and intelligent. The doctor’s role is to facilitate and augment this process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.
  • Naturopathic Education

In Colorado, registered Naturopathic Doctors are required to attend a 4 year, resident naturopathic medical school that is accredited by the Federal Department of Education. Once their educational and clinical hours are completed, they must then pass a national board exam (NPLEX) that is administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE).  There are six accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America.

    Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine

    Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine

National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM)
